After surviving 15 years of layoffs, downsizing and re-engineering in corporate healthcare finance, Lois’ luck (and patience) finally ran out. She decided to become her own boss and follow her passion for jewelry in direct sales. After winning Career Sales and Career Recruiter awards years of her customers telling her to do her own thing, she started Silvergirl Sterling to showcase my favorite designs from around the world.

A Mountain Fix
When it became clear that Lois’ mom needed a little more help, she and her husband Roland sold their home near Baltimore, MD and moved to the mountains of Western Maryland. Although Lois was born and raised in Western Maryland she moved to Baltimore for grad school and a career. The next move was supposed to be a beach town, but life happens!
Although never having had a retail store before, a great site came open and Lois opened A Mountain Fix Boutique near Wisp Ski Resort. Of course the jewelry collection is awesome and the shop won Best Gift Store in Garrett County (reader voted) in just two short years! Unfortunately our landlord, after initially agreeing to a year extension in the summer, told us in September, 2023 that our lease would not be renewed and our last month would be February, 2024. While some items will be available on our online site, our store in McHenry is permanently closed – you can shop a limited selection of products, furniture and fixtures on our website and by browsing photo albums on our Facebook page.
What’s Next…
In addition to having some time to enjoy Deep Creek Lake, MD, we will be giving Silvergirl Sterling some much needed attention and bringing our silver jewelry line back to the coastal gift shops that have loved it from the beginning. There are new opportunities to reach wholesale customers and maybe even some new ways for you to get A Mountain Fix coming in the future.
